Campaigns 2009 fourth phase to end

Shri Rahul Gandhi to address a Public meeting on 5th May 2009 at 2 PM at DDA Park Near Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, Zero Pusta Shastri Park,Delhi as fourth Phase of Lok Sabh ends today.Leaders of different political parties are leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters as campaigning for this phase ends on Tuesday. 85 Parliamentary Constituencies spread over eight states will go to the polls on Thursday in this phase. 19 crore 46 lakhs voters are eligible to cast their vote to decide the political fortune of 1,315 candidates.

Lok Sabha polls on 7th May will end on Tuesday evening, when the fate of BJP President Rajnath Singh, Congress’ Pranab Mukherjee, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD chief Lalu Prasad would be decided.A total of 1,315 candidates, including 119 women, are in the fray in the fourth phase that will witness polling to 85 Lok Sabha seats in eight states and union territories. Polling for all the 25 seats in Rajasthan, 10 in Haryana and seven in Delhi will be completed in one-go.

On the subject of Black money stashed in SWIss and other foreign banks, the apex court listened aptly to a public interest petition black money stashed abroad by Indians, in a mid-election embarrassment for the government which was ticked off for not acting against the suspects.“Why has no action been taken under the Money Laundering Act?” Justice M.K. Sharma, one of the judges on a bench headed by the chief justice, asked the Centre’s counsel.
In surprise move of the decision to reject the government’s plea came after the court had heard out arguments by six persons who filed the PIL and the government, which alleged that people with suspected BJP leanings were behind the petition on the ground that the issue is a major election plank of the BJP.But Anil B. Divan,advocate who appeared for the petitioners, said: “This has not been filed with an eye on elections. We want it to become an ongoing issue.” He further turn down the government’s contention that Swiss authorities had refused to share information on the ground of confidentiality. “If a criminal case is filed, there is no bar to sharing information,” he said. “The Union government is just interested in protecting powerful people who hold their money benami.”

Government counsel Gopal Subramanium urged the court to throw out the petition saying it was based on “diatribes, web downloads and electronic broadcasts”. Supreme Court rejected his plea and fixed July 20 for the next hearing.
Case came to light after petitioners — Gopal Sharman, Jalbala Vaidya, K.P.S. Gill, Prof. B.B. Dutt and Subhash Kashyap, besides Mr. Jethmalani — submitted that according to reports, between 2002 and 2006 an estimated Rs.70 lakh crore was siphoned off from India and parked in foreign bank accounts. The government had not taken any steps to seize such funds and to prosecute and punish the guilty persons, they said.
