Manmohan Singh's cabinet oath ceremony Friday

2009-05-21 07:21:48 - Man Mohan is in process of making history by becoming the Prime Minister of India for the second term the feat achieved by Nehru,in 2009 general elections, he made history as the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to return to power for a second term after completing a full five-year term.Manmohan Singh born 26 September 1932 is the eighteenth Prime Minister of the Republic of India.

Prime Minister of India is the head of government and has effective responsibility for executive power.India follows a parliamentary system of government also known as the Westminster system after that of the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister is generally the leader of a party (or coalition of parties) that has a majority in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of
the Parliament of India. The Prime Minister either has to be a current member of one of the Upper or Lower houses of Parliament, or be elected within six months of being appointed.

President Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil hasa invited Dr. Manmohan Singh to form a new Government at the centre. The swearing in ceremony will take place tomorrow. President in her letter appointing Dr. Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister said that she is doing so on the basis of the fact that the Congress has emerged as the single largest party and the Party led UPA as the largest pre-poll alliance .She said, she has also taken note of the letters of support received from various parties that will enable him to enjoy majority support in the newly constituted 15th Lok Sabha. Mrs. Patil requested Dr. Manmohan Singh to indicate the members of the new council of Ministers. While staking claim to form the Government, Dr Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi handed over letters of support extended to them by various political parties and others.

Later speaking to media, Prime Minister said that along with four independents and pre poll alliance partners they enjoy the support of 274 members. He said, with the support of 48 members of the BSP, SP and the RJD, the number adds up to 322.

Earlier In the first meeting of the UPA constituents, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was re-elected as its Chairperson. Her name was proposed by DMK chief M Karunanidhi and seconded by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee.
At the meeting Dr Manmohan Singh said that promises have been made to the people and the government has to deliver on that. He also said that internal security and communal harmony will the government's priority. He also said that the government will continue and strengthen the flag ship programmes.


Mrs. Sonia Gandhi while seeking cooperation of the UPA allies said that, the Alliance has the responsibility to provide a strong, stable and effective government which can work for the welfare of the people. The leaders of some of the alliance partners who spoke at the meeting also emphasised the need to ensure that all the sections of society especially the poor are benefited through the government programmes and policies. .

Apart from the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Mrs Sonia Gandhi , the meeting was attended by Mr. Pranab Mukherjee , Mr. P Chidamabaram, Mr. A.K Antony , Mr. M Karunanidhi of the DMK, Ms Mamta Bannerji of the Trinamool Congress ,NCP chief Sharad Pawar, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, Muslim League leader E Ahamed, JMM leader Shibu Soren , All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Asaduddin Owaisi, Thol Thirumavalavan of VCK Tamilnadu and Jose K Mani of the Kerela Congress(m)
