Delhi host to South Asian Games in 2012.

Delhi will host the next South Asian Games in 2012. India was picked to host the regional sporting event in the 41st South Asian Olympic Council meeting earlier this month in Dhaka after Bhutan, whose turn it was to host the next SAG, expressed its inability to stage the meet.

The Sports Ministry made it clear that the host city should be Delhi as the South Asian Games will be the perfect opportunity to utilise the huge infrastructure that is being raised for the Commonwealth Games which will be held from 3 to 14th October this year. India has hosted the South Asian Games twice first in 1987 at Kolkata and second in 1995 at Chennai. Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi was in Dhaka to receive the SAG flag after the latest edition drew to a close on Tuesday.

India topped the tally in the 11th South Asian Games in Dhaka.Asserting its supremacy in 11th South Asian Games, India has finished on top with 175 medals including 90 gold, 55 silver and 30 bronze.

Pakistan is a distant second with a total of 80 medals.
India bagged two gold and two silver medals in table tennis singles events in addition to a bronze in Marathon on the last day of the games on Tuesday.

Nearly 1800 athletes from the SAARC countries battled it out for the last 12 days in different cities of Bangladesh for the 158 medals that were at stake in 23 disciplines. The games passed off smoothly except for a technical controversy on the last day over the marathon course reportedly being shorter than the specified Olympic distance. In a fitting finale to the games, Bangladesh bid farewell to all the participants of the games with a spectacular closing ceremony at the Bangabandhu stadium.
