The Railways today honoured its medal winning athletes from the recently concluded Guangzhou Asian Games with cash awards and other service related incentives. Railway Minister Ms. Mamta Banerji felicitated each sportsperson in a brief function in New Delhi today with cash awards of Rupees15 lakhs for each Gold , Rupees 9 lakhs for Silver and Rupees 6 lakhs for Bronze medal.
The twenty Asian Games medal winners from the Railways included 7 from athletics, 7 from the Kabaddi teams, 3 from Archery and one each from Boxing, Wrestling and Gymnastics.
The double Gold winning athlete Ashwini Chidanand considered, that the encouragement given to the athletes will go a long way to inspire the budding sports-persons in the country to choose sports as a career and a means to livelihood.
