Clashes erupt on Nakba Day protests spread to Palestinian territories

Naka Day marked with widespread protests erupted throughout the Palestinian territories today on the annual Nakba Day commemorations. Nakba or Catastrophe is remembered when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled from Palestinian land after the creation of Israel in 1948.According to Israeli media Haaretz, repeated clashes and arrests took place in various Palestinian areas. Israel forces fired two tank shells and several rounds from machine guns as dozens of Palestinian protesters approached the heavily fortified border in the Gaza Strip over the course of the day. A Palestinian health official said that at least 45 people were injured.

According to Maan news agency, demonstrators gathered at the northern entrance to Birzeit University north of Ramallah in the West Bank, setting fire and throwing stones at Israeli troops stationed at Atara checkpoint. Israeli forces fired rubber-coated bullets, tear-gas canisters and stun grenades at protesters.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said that there were around 200 people were engaged in rioting with border police used riot dispersal means to try and break up the disturbance. Police said clashes were also reported in the East Jerusalem district of Issawiya, with youths throwing stones and hurling Molotov cocktails. Several Palestinian refugees also demonstrated in Golan Heights crossing Syrian border.
