India levies anti-dumping duty on steel from EU, China, Korea

India has slapped anti-dumping duty on certain stainless steel products from the European Union and several other nations, including China and Korea, to protect the domestic industry from cheap imports. The duty has been imposed by the Revenue department following recommendation by the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD).
In a notification, the Revenue department said, the levy ranges between 4.58 per cent and 57.39 per cent of the landed value of cold-rolled flat products of stainless steel. The duty will be in effect until December 10, 2020, while certain grades of stainless steel have been exempted from the levy. The anti-dumping duty will be imposed on the imports of stainless steel products from China, Taiwan, South Korea, South Africa, Thailand, the United States and the European Union.
Earlier this month, the government had imposed anti-dumping duty on imports of certain steel wire rods from China for five years.
Anti-dumping measures are taken to ensure fair trade and provide a level-playing field to the domestic industry. They are not a measure to restrict imports or cause an unjustified increase in the cost of products.

ECB to discuss monetary policy

European Central Bank policymakers are to decide whether they will scale back on their extraordinary monetary stimulus program.
Policymakers are to meet at the bank’s headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, on Thursday.
The ECB has been taking unusual steps to kick-start the economy by supplying money to the markets through purchases of government bonds and other assets, and dropping the deposit rate to negative territory.
As a result, moderate economic recovery has continued within the eurozone. Inflationary trends have prompted appeals to cut back on the central bank’s easing measures.
ECB President Mario Draghi last month told reporters that policymakers will decide on the bank’s next step at Thursday’s meeting.
Market sources say the central bank may trim its asset purchases beginning in January of next year.
The US Federal Reserve Board’s policymakers last month agreed to gradually unwind the massive balance sheet that ballooned under its quantitative-easing program.NHK

Panasonic ride on lithium-ion batteries

1026N-Panasonic_middle_300
Panasonic, the world’s leader in  lithium-ion batteries for cars, to increase production in Japan, China and the U.S. as it looks to ride an accelerating global shift to electric vehicles. Investments in additional capacity at all three production bases could reach 100 billion yen ($881 million).
The Gigafactory, a massive battery plant in the U.S. state of Nevada jointly operated by Panasonic and Elon Musk’s Tesla, remains a work in progress even after coming online, with new production lines still being set up. The American electric automaker, eager to ramp up output, is discussing a second round of construction with Panasonic that reportedly would increase capacity by as much as 50%.
Panasonic making hectic  expansion is  underway at a plant in Dalian, China, an aims to bring on stream by the end of March. Panasonic is expected to spend colossal amount million dollars to add a second production line slated to begin operation as early as next year  which will initially be able to churn out batteries for several hundred thousand vehicles a year.
Panasonic in line of  making automotive batteries at a liquid-crystal-display plant in Himeji, near Kobe, in fiscal 2019 this is  to cost several hundred million dollars.
The expansion spree in the consumer electronics group’s paramount  to business-to-business operations. The home appliances still deliver a steady stream of profits, prospects for growth in the Japan-focused business are dim.
Electric vehicles show more promise. As automakers worldwide shift from combustion engines to electric power, their competitiveness will be partly determined by battery capability.
Panasonic boasts a roughly 40% share of the global market for lithium-ion batteries used in passenger cars. Chinese government-supported rivals are rapidly gaining ground in a field formerly dominated by Japanese and South Korean players.
Panasonic on future high note could find its  operating profit at the manufacturer’s automotive and industrial systems division, which includes car batteries, is projected to grow 70% from fiscal 2016 to fiscal 2018, reaching 160 billion yen. The Himeji plant in Japan will continue to make LCD panels for medical equipment, but its new focus will be batteries.
Panasonic thus takes a leap in the manufacturing in its vision with massive investment plans  to retain its competitive edge by expanding capacity across the three key electric-vehicle markets of China, the U.S. and Japan.
Panasonic painful journey  about overspending in the 2000s, during the transition from cathode-ray tube televisions to flat-screen TVs, it spent heavily on production of its own plasma and LCD panels. Panasonic could not retain leadership  out of both after failing to keep up  with big-spending South Korean rivals. Panasonic’s TV-related sales, including panels, shrank from more than 1 trillion yen in fiscal 2009 to just over 300 billion yen in fiscal 2016.

Delhi has become over the past two decades a laboratory of participative experiences (partly because the last two Chief ministers have placed participation at the centre of their politics, although they have defined participation differently). On the basis of the study of four types of participatory dispositives/procedures (wards committees, Bhagidari workshops, jan sunwais and mohalla sabhas) implemented in the capital city, the talk will reflect on the relationship of these participatory practices with urban democracy.
Stéphanie Tawa Lama-Rewal is a research fellow (political science) in the Centre for South Asian Studies (CNRS-EHESS), Paris. She studies the evolving forms of urban democracy in India. She has recently published “Political Representation in India: Enlarging the Perspective”, India Review, vol.15, n°2, 2016, pp. 163-171.
This workshop is free and there is no registration required. Find all the videos of our previous workshops, here.

Japanese firms eye India online

Japanese firms aim to promote their products online in India. They see the country’s e-commerce sector as a promising new market.
The Japan External Trade Organization, or JETRO, is backing the move. It is hosting a business convention for Japanese firms in Tokyo from Tuesday to Friday.
One Japanese firm is showcasing safety pins. Indian women use them to prevent their traditional dress, or saris, from becoming untidy. The company says its products are strong and rust-resistant. It also says the pins can go into cloth easily and do not cause it damage.
JETRO will set up a page on India’s largest e-commerce website Flipkart in January to test market Japanese merchandize.
The safety pin maker has high expectations for India with a population of 1.3 billion. It is confident its pins are safe and high quality.
Flipkart says Indian consumers know that the quality of Japanese products is high, so it wants as many Japanese firms as possible to participate online.NHK

One of our research focus is on the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) sector. Despite the salient nature and role of SMEs sector and the rhetoric that surrounds them, they remain a relatively neglected area for rigorous research and effective policy making.
With this in mind, Pahle India Foundation and YES Global Institute have come together to organise a monthly seminar series, “PIF-YGI Monthly Seminar Series on MSMEs.” The objective of the Seminar Series is to contribute to policy advancement in this important area, by marshalling the available expertise and experience and publishing the proceedings as Policy Briefs.
We are writing to invite you to the fourth seminar of the series, “Opportunities for SMEs in the Gems and Jewellery Sector” and share your viewpoints. We propose to hold the seminar in New Delhi, on October 26, 2017 at Lecture Hall- 2, India International Centre, New Delhi, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

  4. Mr. Ashish V, Vice President, Transaction Banking Group
  5. Mr. Jindal, Promoter – Jindal Dye chem
