For Neil Sanders, it came down to flexibility. He needed a graduate
program that allowed him to stay at home with his two young daughters
while his wife attended medical school. Neil also needed a curriculum
that covered a broad range of agricultural disciplines so he would be
marketable for a job
no matter where life led him and his family. The online Integrated
Resource Management (IRM) master's degree at Colorado State was a
perfect fit for Neil, and in December 2010, he became the first graduate
of the online IRM program.
Broad Appeal of IRM
Integrated Resource Management (IRM) is a concept within agriculture
that examines economic and environmental variables with an orientation
toward more sustainable production. By earning a master's degree in IRM,
students like Neil learn the skills and knowledge necessary to operate
an agricultural
business efficiently and sustainably while making a profit.
Neil said the IRM graduate program at Colorado State touches on many
areas of animal sciences and natural resource management, giving the
program a broad appeal and making it applicable to people of various
backgrounds. Neil earned a bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences from
Colorado State in 2003,
so he said some of the animal topics were a review for him, but these
topics were new for other students in his classes. Conversely, he said
while a forester would find the material on trees and shrubs to be a
review, these topics were new to him.
